Poggio alle Gazze

After a mild and rainy winter, March saw a temporary drop in temperatures with a few nights below 0°C right at the beginning of budding, in the last week of the month. However, newly budded shoots were still protected by the cottony bud tissue, which helped prevent frost damage. The rest of the spring saw generally warm weather with normal rainfall, ensuring regular vegetative development until flowering which occurred between May 20 and 25. In June a very intense rainfall in the middle of the month was followed by a very long dry period with a substantial absence of rainfall and torrid temperatures until the end of August. The veraison took place in a homogeneous and fast way between July 20th and 25th, starting the ripening of the grapes under a burning sun. Harvesting started even before Ferragosto, on August 13th, with the Sauvignon bunches of "milleviti" and ended on August 24th. Exceptionally in the same period were also harvested Viognier and Verdicchio, whereas Vermentino continued its ripening until September in order to be harvested in the second week of the month. The early harvest and the absence of marked water stress, thanks to the abundant rainfall in June, allowed the expression of a beautiful aromatic typicality, in particular of Sauvignon. With its classic brilliant straw yellow color, Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia 2020 expresses itself on the nose with a beautiful aromatic intensity: scents of boxwood and white flowers, accompanied by notes of white peach, sage and herbs are released in the glass. On the palate, the wine fills the mouth with elegance and firmness showing the right balance between acid crispness and density. The finish is lively, persistent and of good sapidity.
