Berta
Berta is a historical grappa distillery in Piedmont which has its roots back in 1947, when Paolo Berta, son of a vine-dresser from Mombaruzzo, founded the first distillery in Nizza Monferrato, to add the offer of distillates to his father's wine production. Against the expansion of large-scale distribution and the offer of industrial and low-quality grappas, the Berta distillery imposed itself on the market with high quality artisanal products, linked to ancient traditions. The distillery remains in the hands of the children and of the new generations of the Berta family and in 2002 it moved to the place of origin of the family, in Casalotto di Mombaruzzo. Today the Berta distillery is run by the fourth generation of the family and continues to represent an Italian symbol of quality grappa in the world. The pomace from every region of Italy is kept fresh and moist in hermetically sealed 200 kg food-grade plastic containers. Here the pomace ferments and a small air valve allows the release of carbon dioxide; the vacuum created inside the container favors the perfect preservation of the raw material to be distilled, which remains fresh until spring. The fermented pomace then ends up in the baskets of the steam powered alembics and begins a rigorous distillation process which favors quality over quantity. The grappa produced rests in stainless steel containers and then, eventually, in wooden barrels placed in large underground deposits. Grappa from Berta's distilleries is not a simple digestive, but not even a distillate of peasant origin with a strong and aggressive taste. It is instead an excellent product to be tasted and meditated, smooth, sweet and gentle. The extraordinary and different aromas of this great grappa, of unique complexity and inebriating aromas, are a must for all the lovers of the best distillate made in Italy.
