Calafe'

Calafè winery, behind the magnificent city of Naples, in the inland of Campania, unravels the mountainous region of Irpinia, in the vast province of Avellino, devastated in the past by terrible seismic events. Here the long-standing dream of Benito Petrillo, who for years owned a well-known bookstore in the center of the provincial capital, has come true. The great passion and patience needed in publishing, the long term investments, are attitudes that find, in every sense, fertile ground also in the wine field. The evolution determined by the passing of time, improving with patience, the characteristics of transformation that positively meet the taste of the public, the values of the world of books are not very different from the ones needed to be successful in the enoic field. Calafè is, therefore, a worthy representative of the territory, being himself a lover of it. He bought about two hectares of land in the heart of Irpinia's mountains in 1999. Greco di Tufo and Aglianico, both autochthonous grapes of this region and that are getting the interest they longed for in the last years, have their roots in sulfur rich soils, close to a sunny hill, near Prata Principato Ultra. The winery is small in size and manages to practice a meticulous control over the vinification phases, concentrating on maintaining a great quality regime. Grapes undergo alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks at low temperature, subsequently spending a whole year on fine lees. During this period, they undergo malolactic fermentation, which refines and softens their sensorial characteristics. Calafè's reds and whites see their origins from the love for the three granddaughters of Benito, who decided to use the acronym of their names (Camilla, Laura and Federica) to give a title to his winery. Greco di Tufo finds, thanks to this winemaker, its best expression both in the classic version, with its distinctive mineral scents associated to flint and combined to citrus and citric nuances, and in the "Ariavecchia" version, with its strongly sulfured flavors, the freshness softened by aging and the strong and pleasing sapidity. A passion born for books and which blossomed in the land, the love for the family, are values which give us extraordinary and widely awarded wines.
