Coppo
In the early years of the 1900's Piero Coppo founded the homonymous winery in Canelli, already the capital of Moscato and Barbera wines. Coppo winery consolidates and expands with Piero's son, Luigi, who brought great innovations and modernizations in order to make it more and more competitive in the difficult years of the postwar period. It will be Luigi's four sons to give a decisive change to the production of the winery, introducing in the family vineyards, cultivated with Moscato, Barbera and Freisa, the international grapes Chardonnay and Cabernet. In 1984 the fourth generation, represented by Massimiliano and Edoardo, took over the management of the winery, but the philosophy is always the same: to take care of the wines produced in every detail, with love and hard work, because this is the only way to obtain exceptional wines. The fifty-two hectares (fifty-two acres) of vineyards belonging to Coppo family are located in the territory of Canelli, rooted in marly calcareous soils, with a perfect south-southwest exposure. The winery, which winds underground for kilometers, is divided in two parts: an aseptic and hypertechnological part, where are dominated machines and tools of the latest generation, and another silent and muffled, with brick ceilings, where in the half-light rest in wooden barrels the wines suitable for aging. It is a labyrinth of tunnels, today a Unesco World Heritage Site. Ancient traditions and modern technologies, if wisely used, cannot but give surprising results, just like the wines of Coppo winery.
