Giacomo Conterno
Cantina Giacomo Conterno was founded in 1900 in Monforte d'Alba by Giacomo, a descendant of a family of winemakers active in the area since 1800. It was his son Giovanni who, in 1912, bottled Barolo, masterfully made from selected grapes grown in the area. At that time wine was sold in casks or demijohns and bottled wine was a rarity. In 1934 Giacomo, Giovanni's son, will produce that extraordinary wine which is Barolo Monfortino, so called in memory of his ancestral home in Monforte. In 1974 Giacomo bought the Cascina Francia vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba: 14 hectares of land particularly suited for the cultivation of Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes. The vineyard is cultivated with traditional systems and does not leave anything to chance: careful pruning, elimination of excess bunches, defoliation in order to allow the passage of sun and air on the grapes, harvesting in the best period: simple and ancient devices useful to obtain excellent wines. The wine that comes from this exceptional soil does not need to be forced, but it is sufficient to exalt to the maximum what nature has made available. This is the philosophy of the winery and, in particular, of Roberto, the last descendant of Conterno family at the head of the winery. A winery and a wine which are certainly ambassadors of Italian excellence in the world.
